Economic Development Tools
Economic development creates jobs and wealth. Economic development tools help local governments revitalize neighborhoods and commercial areas that may not be living up to their full potential. Numerous state and federal economic development programs can help local governments attract investment in their communities. During this period of economic uncertainty and restructuring of Michigan’s auto industry, state and local governments must respond quickly and creatively to develop new knowledge-based industries to replace and enhance those losing presence in the region. This requires dialog and partnerships between government, education, and business. At the same time, helping existing businesses succeed through strategic economic development incentives is vital to protecting jobs.

SEMCOG analyzes economic, business, and development trends in Southeast Michigan as a basis for promoting local economic development strategies and policies.

SEMCOG focuses its economic development efforts on:

  • providing technical assistance training and information on resources and best practices to local governments,
  • developing policies and recommendations for addressing the economic changes, and
  • advocating for tools and resources to assist local governments.
