SEMCOG advocating for legislation to provide increased transportation funding for Southeast Michigan
SEMCOG is actively involved in advocating for legislation to adequately fund Southeast Michigan’s transportation system. From today through 2030, Southeast Michigan will need nearly $70 billion to adequately maintain and improve the region’s transportation system. At this time, federal, state, and local governments calculate about $40 billion in available revenue, leaving a $30 billion shortfall. Short-term solutions in the bipartisan legislation include:

  • Raising the gas tax by nine cents over three years,
  • Creating diesel-tax parity, and
  • Increasing the vehicle registration fee.

Additionally, SEMCOG continues to advocate for a federal transportation bill that provides funding equity. Michigan is a donor state, in that we send more federal transportation dollars to the federal government than what we get back in transportation funding. More information about transportation funding in Southeast Michigan can be found in the Winter 2007 edition of SEMscope.
