Are your vehicle's emissions good, fair, or poor?
New SEMCOG program may tell you…and help you save gas

SEMCOG, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments, announces a new initiative aimed at improving air quality in Southeast Michigan while saving on gasoline expenses.

One way to learn if a vehicle is burning more fuel than it should involves a sampling device at the side of the road that measures a vehicle's pollution as it drives by. Equipment will be positioned in several areas in Southeast Michigan beginning around April 23 and ending approximately May 12 (inclement weather will impact these dates). Drivers will know if they've passed one of these testing sites. A sign that will rate vehicle emissions "good, fair, or poor" will give drivers immediate feedback. Those vehicles experiencing emission control problems will be encouraged to take the vehicle for evaluation and repair.

While small in number, vehicles experiencing emission control problems can contribute over half of the total pollution coming from all motor vehicles. In many parts of the country, all vehicles must be tested and failed vehicles must be repaired. Instead, SEMCOG is promoting voluntary action by owners of these vehicles with higher-than-expected pollution levels.

There are a variety of explanations for higher-than-expected fuel use and pollutant emissions. Whatever the reason, this could cost vehicle owners up to several hundred dollars a year extra in gasoline use.

This program is one more piece of Southeast Michigan's air quality improvement plan. Being in compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's air quality standards has important implications for the region's economic well-being and quality of life.
