Regional Clearinghouse Review Committee agrees to regional impact review of Milan Township project

SEMCOG's Regional Clearinghouse Review Committee (RC2) agreed to conduct a regional impact review of a proposed, nearly 4,900-acre residential and mixed-use project by Crosswinds Development in Milan Township. The request was made by Milan Township, with support from the Monroe County Planning Commission, Washtenaw County Planning and Environment, and the City of Milan. A project of this size in a rural area, bordering two counties could have a significant impact on development in that area and across the region. Safety belt enforcement a priority in Southeast Michigan through September 12

Buckling safety belts will be a priority now through September 12 as part of the national Click It or Ticket safety belt enforcement mobilization. Michigan is on the verge of reaching its goal of 90 percent safety belt use in 2004. The state's safety belt use rate was at 87 percent during the recent Memorial Day enforcement mobilization campaign. Safety belt use is lowest among 16-to-29-year-olds at 81.3 percent, according to a direct observation survey conducted by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. For males in that age group, safety belt use is only 75.2 percent, compared to 88.2 percent for females in the same age group. During 2003 enforcement mobilizations, police across Michigan issued 46,170 tickets for non-use of safety belts and child restraints. Enforcement zones will be in effect in all seven counties in the SEMCOG region. Dates and locations of the enforcement zones are available in the electronic version of this news release on SEMCOG's Web site æ www.semcog.org.
