The principle purpose of SEMCOG is to help local governments improve and maintain Southeast Michigan's transportation systems, environmental quality, economic interests, and infrastructure. Coordinated efforts between SEMCOG and its members ensure that resources are used efficiently and policies and procedures are optimized using the best and most complete data available.
SEMCOG is involved with several areas of public interest.
- As the region's designated Metropolitan Planning Organization, SEMCOG is responsible for regional transportation planning.
- Environmental Quality
- Under the federal Water Pollution Control Act and the Clean Air Act, SEMCOG is the designated planning agency for both water and air quality.
- Economic Development
- SEMCOG is responsible for specific housing and land use planning elements as authorized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
- Clearinghouse Review
- As the Michigan State Single Point of Contact (SPOC), SEMCOG reviews select federal grant applications for a variety of local, regional, and state projects in relation to regional plans and policies.
Current Work Program
The Work Program for Southeast Michigan (pdf, 1.5MB) is the document that serves as the basis for all SEMCOG activities. It discusses issues facing the region, a framework for regional decision making, and specific task activities and budgets for SEMCOG and its pass-through agencies. The Work Program is updated annually; throughout the year, the Work Program may be amended as projects are added or activities change.
Funding is provided through membership dues which are used to match federal and state grants.
