Housing is an essential element of community development. It impacts residents and governments, property values, local revenues, public services, and community stability.

The Regional Housing Needs and Neighborhood Resiliency Strategy for Southeast Michigan provides a foundation for action to address the systemic housing challenges on a regional level. The strategy specifically provides 14 policy recommendations to be advocated at the state and federal levels and 24 implementation actions to be implemented both regionally and at the local level. It also includes the region's Fair Housing and Equity Assessment (FHEA).

Residential Construction

SEMCOG monitors residential and nonresidential construction in Southeast Michigan, providing important perspectives on the region's growth, including tools for economic and workforce development. SEMCOG's data and analysis help in local decision making.

Building Permits Database

SEMCOG collects and publishes residential building permit information for all 233 communities in Southeast Michigan. New construction and demolition information are collected for single family, two-family, condominium, and multi-family units. Data from year 2000 to present are available in Community Profiles.

Building permit counts by community from mid-1969 to the present, as well as county summaries, are also available.

Manufactured Housing

Manufactured housing parks are defined as those parks containing three or more sites licensed by the State of Michigan. The SEMCOG manufactured housing dataset includes the name and location of the park and number of sites within the park. You can download tables containing detailed information on individual parks from 2013 and 2012 below:
