Elections this year

SEMCOG’s Executive Committee elections will be conducted at individual county bloc outreach meetings in the winter of 2026. Along with the elections, these interactive meetings will provide an opportunity to learn about hot topics at SEMCOG and network with member elected officials and staff. Details about the outreach meetings and elections will be included in Regional Update and other notices moving forward.

NOTE: Prior to 2025, these elections took place at March General Assembly meetings.

If you submitted the form in the first 24-26 hours after receiving the link, please resubmit your nomination.

The Executive Committee’s role

The Executive Committee is the chief working committee and financial control body for SEMCOG. It proposes, discusses, and reviews regional studies and plans, and takes action on policies and legislative positions to improve Southeast Michigan. The Committee meets six times per year at SEMCOG offices.

Meeting discussion

SEMCOG’s Chairperson is responsible for leading Executive Committee meetings. Typical agenda items include reports from standing committees and task forces in the areas of transportation, economic development, environment and infrastructure, finance and budget, and legislative issues. The Executive Committee is charged with approving important regional plans within these planning areas. Other agenda items include guest speakers from member communities and partner agencies, panel discussions, and input sessions.

Running for a seat

General Assembly delegates and alternates are eligible to run for the Executive Committee representing their respective county and government bloc (Cities/ Villages or Townships). Our education delegates and alternates are eligible to run for Executive Committee seats for Community Colleges and Intermediate School Districts (ISDs). General Assembly delegates and alternates for counties and the City of Detroit are automatically seated on the Executive Committee. Specific requirements are as follows:

  • Delegates must be elected officials,
  • Alternates may be elected or appointed officials,
  • Alternates to the General Assembly can only serve as alternates to the Executive Committee.

Delegates and alternates to the Executive Committee are also eligible to serve as SEMCOG officers. However, only elected official members are eligible to serve as officers. Please consider running in the elections if you are a SEMCOG General Assembly representative for your community. We encourage our members to attend the outreach meetings and vote in the elections!
