Bridge construction and maintenance is one of the largest investments in infrastructure in Southeast Michigan. Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and local agencies provide regular reports on the condition of just over 3,000 structures in the seven-county SEMCOG region. SEMCOG’s Bridge Condition Map has been updated to provide local officials and stakeholders with information about bridges throughout the region.

Current Bridge Conditions

Currently, 30.5% (by sq. ft. of deck area) of bridges are in good condition while 8.1% (by sq. ft. of deck area) are in poor condition, based on the 2025 data update to the Bridge Conditions Map. The map now includes a time stamp to show when data was last updated by MDOT. Users can still filter by location, owner, and condition. The information can be exported to both Excel and Geographic Information System (GIS) formats.

Recent trends continue. The percent of bridges by deck area remains below 10% poor over the past several years. There has been a slight increase of bridges in fair condition and a slight decrease of bridges in good condition.

Condition by percent deck area line graph, fair condition was under 50 percent in 2014, at 61.5 percent in 2025. Good condition was near 40 percent in 2014, is at 30.5 percent in 2025. Poor condition at 11 percent in 2014, at 8.1 percent in 2025

Pedestrian Bridge Update

In 2025, the MDOT Metro Region began its study of State-owned pedestrian bridges in the tri-county Detroit region. MDOT hosted six open houses, an online survey, and attended community meetings to engage the public. The feedback garnered from the public and local partners will be instrumental in developing a strategic plan for prioritizing the department’s investments in these important community connections.
