Bridges are an important part of Southeast Michigan’s transportation system.
Bridge management is a part of SEMCOG’s Transportation Management Systems. The bridge management program uses the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) Michigan Structure Inventory and Appraisal (MSIA) database to analyze and report the conditions of bridges in Southeast Michigan.
The MSIA database is updated in the spring and summer months as bridge inspections are completed. This database describes in detail the bridge ownership, usage, condition, and age of the region’s bridges. An annual summary of the database allows SEMCOG to track changes in bridge conditions from year to year. Information obtained from the MSIA database helps SEMCOG and our regional planning partners develop policies and priorities for maintaining the region’s bridges.
