As SEMCOG celebrates Founder’s Week, we thank our Charter Members, 59 amazing communities from Southeast Michigan that joined SEMCOG in 1968 to foster regional collaboration. See them all on the map and map legend below.
The “Original 59” were an impressive mix of strong local governments…counties, cities, villages, townships, and educational agencies, of every shape and size from throughout the region. The originals included the central core of the region – Wayne County and Detroit, as well as beyond – from Ypsilanti and Auburn Hills to Monroe and Monroe County, St. Clair County and Port Huron, to Richmond, Romeo, and Royal Oak Township. This quote from Michael Misteravich, City of Richmond Mayor Pro-Tem is a great testament to our diverse membership, “[It’s] nice to see a small little town like us being involved in SEMCOG for so many years.”
We honor our charter members with a plaque on our office wall.
At the time, common interests and the desire for collaboration created a stronger region. Throughout our history, SEMCOG’s work has responded to the issues of the time. Today, those issues include data analysis, transportation, community and economic development, air and water quality, infrastructure planning, and education, providing planning resources for member communities while simultaneously garnering funding support for the region as a whole-definitely a win-win situation.
This Founder’s Week, we thank our 59 original members, as well as our 174 current members!
Since 1968, your support and leadership has continued to make Southeast Michigan a vibrant place to live, work, and play.
