In order to create a successful future for Southeast Michigan, we must have an educated and engaged public. Grant’s blog posts will focus on important messages for residents on how their daily habits can improve quality of life for themselves and their neighbors.

In Macomb County, a powerful partnership is reshaping how high school students prepare for life after graduation. The collaboration between Macomb Intermediate School District and Macomb Community College is helping students connect the dots between classroom learning and real world careers.

The Macomb Intermediate School District and Macomb Community College partnership provides high school students with meaningful exposure to post-secondary and workforce opportunities. Macomb Community College staff actively serve on Career and Technical Education advisory boards across Macomb County high schools, ensuring that curriculum and programming remain aligned with college expectations and industry trends.

Students benefit directly through hands-on experiences such as campus tours of Macomb Community College’s facilities where they can explore college programs and visualize their futures. This early exposure helps students make confident, informed decisions about their next steps in education and career.

One example of this partnership’s success is active participation from both educators and college staff. High school teachers attend MCC-hosted events and tours, while MCC faculty contribute their expertise to local advisory boards. This two-way involvement fosters stronger connections and clearer communication leading to outcomes such as articulation agreements that allow students to earn college credit for high school coursework.

A great example of this collaboration is Macomb Community College’s Innovate and Build event, held annually in October. This event is designed for high school students interested in skilled trades, offering interactive experiences and a glimpse into careers that drive Michigan’s economy. Events like these demonstrate how the partnership supports workforce development and vocational training areas that are vital in today’s labor market.

To ensure that students graduate with skills that align with industry needs, Macomb Intermediate School District and Macomb Community College work together through various regional committees. These include the:

  • Workforce Development Board
  • Career and Education Advisory Council
  • Macomb Cybersecurity Collaborative
  • Manufacturing Day Committee
  • CTE Program Advisory Boards

These collaborative efforts ensure that K-12 curriculum remains relevant, adaptive, and responsive to post-secondary expectations and industry needs.

Like any long-term partnership, the relationship between Macomb Intermediate School District and Macomb Community College faces challenges particularly in managing and updating articulation agreements across a large number of programs. Ensuring a streamlined review process is complex but necessary to maintain alignment and student benefit.

Despite these challenges, the successes outweigh the setbacks. The partnership continues to evolve, providing Macomb County students with a head start on their careers and a clearer path to college achievement. This collaboration serves as a model for how school districts and colleges can work together to empower the next generation.
