education’s role in regional success

SEMCOG is a unique organization among its state and national peers as it includes educational interests within its membership. Intermediate School Districts as well as Community Colleges are eligible to be members of SEMCOG. Public universities within the region are also invited to participate as associate members. Schools serve and are accountable to the same residents as other local governments. Our partnership with schools allow for coordinated and collaborative decision making.

Education is viewed as an integral component of a thriving region. A regional economy depends on a broad spectrum of skills, talents and educational backgrounds. SEMCOG also recognizes that education does not end with a high school or college degree. Instead, there is an understanding that today’s skills may not match tomorrow’s needs. SEMCOG is working with its education partners as well as business labor and local governments to create the future workforce.

SEMCOG population and economic data analysis can assist school districts with projecting future school age populations; a critical issue for long range financial and infrastructure planning. In addition, education members are encouraged to participate in regional decision making through participation in task forces that address critical regional issues.
