10 Things to Be Thankful for in Southeast Michigan

Like most of you, I will spend time this week enjoying family and friends while also reflecting on the good things in life. One thing I always remember to appreciate is that SEMCOG gives me the opportunity to experience and understand Southeast Michigan in a very unique way. So before I sit down for my Thanksgiving celebration (meticulously planned, as you might expect), I want to remind you of some of the great things about our region. In no particular order, here are just a few of the things to be thankful for in Southeast Michigan:

1. Good Neighbors

No matter what challenges they might face, the people of Southeast Michigan are talented, hardworking, resilient, generous, and always remain ready to lend a hand.

2. Leadership

At SEMCOG, we see firsthand that our elected officials are smart, dedicated, and creative when it comes to tackling regional issues.

3. Cooperation

Those same talented leaders from throughout this region bring unique strengths and perspectives to the table and work together to address the issues that impact us all.

4. Diverse Places

In Southeast Michigan, we can choose to live in a variety of unique urban, rural, or suburban communities with tremendous amenities.

5. Abundant Environmental Assets

In the heart of the Great Lakes region, we enjoy access to the world’s greatest supply of freshwater in our lakes, rivers, and streams as well as a phenomenal network of parks and trails.

6. Opportunity

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of leaders in government, business, education, labor, and workforce agencies across Southeast Michigan, our region is a place where people can thrive.

7. Quality Institutions

The schools, universities, businesses, and philanthropic institutions in this region are second to none.

8. Premier Attractions

Access to world-class sports, arts, and music make our region a great place to live and a desirable destination for tourists.

9. The SEMCOG Team

I am thankful for the knowledgeable, passionate, and talented staff of SEMCOG, who are dedicated to our region’s success.

10. Food

Great diversity of people brings great food options. Whether it’s a night on the town or the groceries that fill up your holiday table, Southeast Michigan has us covered for a delicious variety of options. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
