A sure sign of summer in many communities is the reopening of farmers markets. Whether you’re looking to stock up on the season’s freshest fruits and vegetables, or locally grown flowers for your garden, these events bring people together and celebrate what the region’s farms have to offer. Did you know that Michigan is among the most agriculturally diverse states in the US, second only to California?
Like most things this year, however, farmers markets are looking a little different. As an essential component of our food system – especially within local economies – farmers markets have been allowed to remain open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. And while regulations and recommendations around this have evolved, the Michigan Farmers Market Association (MIFMA) has been a steady source of information and resources for more than 300 local markets statewide – 70 of which are here in Southeast Michigan.
With many communities working on plans to reopen for the season, SEMCOG hosted a webinar to share guidance from MIFMA and examples of how communities are planning to adapt. This included lessons learned from Detroit’s Eastern Market, which has remained open throughout the pandemic. Recently, we sat down with some of these folks again to hear an update for SEMCOG’s podcast – Region Ahead, now that more markets have opened for the year.
While all communities should be working closely with County Health Departments to understand local conditions, we also encourage market organizers and local decision makers to continue looking to MIFMA for guidance and updates. There are many COVID-19 resources posted on their website, like this printable sign, with safety recommendations that will continue to be relevant through future phases of reopening:
This year, we may miss the vibrant atmosphere that these markets bring to our communities, but we know that these measures will ensure that fresh local food is accessible to buy, and that our region’s farmers have opportunities to sell, all while maintaining a safe environment for everyone.
