It’s no secret that Southeast Michigan has some of the best parks, even within our urban areas. Innovation Hills in Rochester Hills is now high on my list of favorite parks after visiting this summer.
Members of SEMCOG were invited to experience the park and hear from Mayor Barnett and some of the wonderful staff from Rochester Hills. They shared information and perspectives not only about the park itself, but the incredible journey to its creation.
After hearing the intriguing story of the park’s ongoing development, we set out to see the results of years of planning and labor. Innovation Hills lived up to the hype (and beyond!); the amenities this park offers truly make it a space everyone can enjoy.
Accessible and inclusive
The park was created with accessibility in mind for all users. The attractive playground is tastefully fenced for all to enjoy with plenty of space to sit and take in the space. It is truly a beautiful thing to have a safe and inclusive space for play! Humans are not the only beings welcome to the park; leashed dogs are invited too! Dog bag stations are among the park’s amenities.
Things you won’t want to miss
With 110 acres of stunning spaces, my favorites are the ponds (plenty of turtles!), the boardwalk path (gorgeous views!), and the very knowledgeable staff (welcoming, knowledgeable, and helpful!). An honorable mention goes to the kayak launch. While it is a bit tucked away in the back of the park, the walk to get there is beautiful. Not only that, but there is also a call-ahead service that will transport kayaks to the launch! This is also a great access point for fishing, following DNR regulations of course.
While summer is ending, I look forward to seeing this park when the fall colors arrive. Seasonal change does mean the night sky comes a little earlier, but at Innovation Hills you can find your way with lighted pathways and glowing pavement. Stop by the park if you get the chance, and experience the beauty for yourself!
