I recently had the opportunity to attend a public meeting in Bedford Township, Monroe County. The purpose of the meeting was to gather public input regarding efforts to update the township’s Master Plan. The committee driving the Master Plan update has done great work to involve the public – not only through meetings like the one I attended – but also by conducting a community survey. SEMCOG supplied the township with data on pavement conditions – potholes are a major concern in the township, as they are throughout Southeast Michigan. SEMCOG has a wide variety of information that is useful for Master Plan updates. For example:
- Aerial photos dating back to 1949. Black-and-white digital photography is available for 1985-2000. Color ortho-imagery is available for 2005. We also have imagery for 2008 and 2010.
- Maps that show features such as land use, land cover, sewer service areas, watersheds, floodplains and groundwater resources, historic sites, parks and recreation areas, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, green infrastructure network, and high crash locations.
- Data sets, including employment data by industry, 2040 forecast data, building permits and nonresidential development data, transportation projects, traffic volumes, and pavement/bridge conditions.
