Like many of you, I am working remotely. As I work from my dining room table, I am reflecting on some things I have learned during the pandemic.
- The importance of technology. It is facilitating our ability to connect with SEMCOG members, partners, and staff. The investments made by SEMCOG have paid off in making this possible from day one.
- The many ways beyond in-person meetings to connect with you. We have had success delivering information to you through webinars. In fact, we have had great participation from local governments and education districts throughout the region. We continue to learn more about how to make these sessions interactive. We’ve connected with you through several blog posts that share staff expertise. And we have produced videos and podcasts to send important messages related to COVID-19. I have also used old-fashioned technology – the phone.
- The importance of SEMCOG data. The data we’ve developed and have on our website can be an important resource during this crisis. For example, it can help you identify vulnerable populations. I encourage you to visit our website, email, or call our Information Center (313-324-3330) for help in accessing. We’ve also added new data during the pandemic and have highlighted it in Regional Update.
- This crisis has heightened the challenges faced in areas of our region not well served with broadband infrastructure and by individuals without access. Our education district members have shared their challenges in delivering remote schooling particularly where there is limited access to online learning. We are hosting a webinar on this topic on May 13.
- The influence of local governments with state and federal policymakers is stronger when we speak with a common voice. Advocacy needs are enhanced during this pandemic and we are helping members understand the impacts of Executive Orders, federal COVID-related legislation, state budget cuts, and municipal finances.
- The essential role of local government in the region and the need to recognize and thank our local officials. We produced a thank-you video and hope you watch and share it.
- The creativity and adaptability of SEMCOG staff to seek ways to help our members respond to the pandemic and plan for the future of the region. Our staff directory can connect you to any of them.
While not working from the office, I have come to recognize even more the importance of SEMCOG and the work we do for the region. Our work to provide data, facilitate and convene sharing of best practices, and communicate with you and the public is helping our region. Let me know if you have thoughts about how we can be helpful.
