At the City of Taylor’s State of the City address, Mayor Rick Sollars was joined by Taylor Schools Superintendent Ben Williams and Wayne County Executive Warren Evans. All three community leaders spoke to the importance of partnerships in pushing their organizations toward greater outcomes.
This, of course, was music to my ears – partnerships are the very foundation of SEMCOG’s 50 years of success. Both Wayne County and the City of Taylor have been outstanding SEMCOG partners for all 50 years. (Note: Taylor is also celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year; more on that in a future blog.)
Under Mayor Sollars’ leadership, Taylor has leveraged partnerships to achieve a wide range of community improvements. Here are a few of the highlights:
Heritage Park – A destination attraction that includes Coan Lake; an historical area featuring the original township hall (circa 1855), a one-room school, petting zoo, ball diamonds, and soccer fields. Heritage Park is home to the Junior League World Series. To enhance this major city asset, Taylor has worked with Wayne County Community College to improve park safety and connectivity. Work will continue on connecting the park with other points of interest in the city.
Eureka Road Corridor – A redeveloping business corridor with nationally known restaurants, coffee shops, and more. Wahlburgers is opening in March and the mayor anticipates additional notable announcements later this year.
- Frank and Poet Drain improvements – Green infrastructure techniques will be deployed to help the city improve both functionality and aesthetics in dealing with stormwater runoff.
- Good to Great Neighborhood Improvement Plan – A maintenance and investment plan that includes signs, trees, utilities, roads, sewers, and public safety.
Learning about the great things happening in our member communities is one of my favorite parts of the job. Let us know about your accomplishments – we are happy to share them with the regional community!
