nonresidential development
SEMCOG monitors residential and nonresidential construction in Southeast Michigan, providing an important perspective on the region’s economic and demographic growth. Regional Development data can help local governments understand development trends, visualize where new development is occurring within their own community and surrounding communities, and plan for future infrastructure needs.
Nonresidential development as defined by SEMCOG is construction of a building that will contain economic activity. SEMCOG tracks 20 different types of nonresidential construction using various resources. Construction must be a new building, an addition to an existing building, major renovation, or a redevelopment which includes tearing down the old and constructing new. Projects must be completed and opened, or under construction. Project data is presented by floorspace (square feet), building type, and construction value.
SEMCOG has been reporting on nonresidential development (construction) in Southeast Michigan since the early 1990s. Data are collected from community planning and building departments, county planning departments, and local news articles.
A summary of the past few years of nonresidential development in Southeast Michigan can be found at the Nonresidential Development Dashboard. Older data can be found in annual reports in the SEMCOG Publications Database.
