Housing is a key component of economic and community vitality.
- Quality housing contributes to creating desirable communities and neighborhoods;
- It supports talent attraction and retention in the region; and
- Housing options near employment centers and key amenities can increase access to jobs, and essential services and improve productivity and livability.
SEMCOG offers a number of essential data tools related to housing. These can be used for developing community master plans, housing needs assessments, economic development plans, or general housing studies. In 2025, the State of Michigan began requiring that housing be included as a component of community master plans.
Additional Housing Resources
The Michigan Data Portal, hosted by the State of Michigan, has data available at the county and state level. This includes but is not limited to homeownership, changes in housing supply over time, and rental affordability.
The Statewide Housing Plan Webpage, hosted by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), includes a 5-year Statewide Housing Plan that was adopted in June of 2022 as well as regional housing plans which can be downloaded or viewed online.
