Amy has been with SEMCOG for over 25 years. Much of that time has been spent working the member relations beat. More recently she has added another role, becoming Vice President of SEMCOG’s partner organization the Metropolitan Affairs Coalition (MAC). Amy has a Master's degree in Public Administration from Eastern Michigan.

Highlighting the good work of Southeast Michigan’s local governments (our members) is one of the really fun things we do at SEMCOG. Hard working elected officials and staff in communities throughout the region are always finding creative ways to improve quality of life and respond to the needs of residents. Sharing these innovations is a huge part of SEMCOG’s efforts to build and sustain regional connections among local government peers.

While our members have continued to overcome new challenges and innovate to better serve their residents, I have really missed having the chance to gather and celebrate successes over the last year and a half. While much can be accomplished at virtual gatherings, there is no substitute for actually being together in a place to experience something and discuss it. This summer, with deliberation and caution, we have begun a series of member meet-ups at various locations around the region to experience excitement of local projects and regional assets.

Brandenburg Park – Chesterfield Township

Recently, we visited Brandenburg Park in Chesterfield Township. Located along the shores of Lake St. Clair, this park is also the site of recent improvements to the shoreline. These enhancements will allow better access to kayaking, fishing, and simple enjoyment of the peace and beauty of the lake. Chesterfield Township officials have long recognized the park as a unique asset and have been working to create a destination for paddlers by offering the ability to travel along the Salt River and connect with Lake St. Clair.

A key connection point is the newly opened Webber Paddle Park – a recipient of SEMCOG’s Regional Showcase Award. Webber Park offers easy and convenient access to a kayak launch dock and parking lot. When embarking from this location, kayakers can travel leisurely upstream and downstream to points of interest including the Salt River Nature Center, the World’s Finest Frozen Custard & Mini Golf, and the Marina District. More adventurous paddlers also have the ability to access Lake St. Clair at Brandenburg Park.

SEMCOG was excited to honor Chesterfield Township’s work on Webber Paddle Park as a stellar example of local government effectiveness and collaboration – funding for the park was made possible through partnerships and contributions from the Webber Foundation, the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund, Chesterfield Township, and Macomb County.

Thanks to the elected leaders in Chesterfield Township including Supervisor Kersten, Treasurer Elliott, Trustee Vosburg and the passionate staff leaders who hosted the meet-up and shared their strategies for turning vision into reality!

Hope you will join us at the next meet-Up – watch Regional Update for an announcement of the date and location.
