Many diehard anglers already know that Southeast Michigan has plenty of parks (nearly 200, searchable via Southeast Michigan ParkFinder®) with fishing. Many paddlers know that the Huron River Water Trail is an invaluable regional asset. Both groups will be excited about some recent accessibility news from the Huron-Clinton Metroparks.

This week, a ribbon cutting marked the accessibility and environmental improvements made in Lower Huron Metropark. The site is an essential access point to the Huron River, and improvements enhanced functions related to accessibility, recreational use, stormwater management, and wildlife habitat.

Improvements feature:
- Accessibility improvements to existing amenities including the canoe/kayak launch, picnicking areas, parking lot, restroom, and fishing deck;
- Expanded parking lot with trailer parking spaces and an accessible pathway to the hike-bike trail;
- New turnaround drop-off for paddlers;
- Various trail amenities, including a trailhead structure that incorporates Iron Belle Trail and Huron River Water Trails maps, a bike/wheelchair repair station, and a pet waste station; and
- Landscaping to reduce the mowed area, increase wildlife habitat, and aid in stormwater management efforts.

Located in Belleville Michigan, this park is one of the 13 Metroparks located throughout Southeast region.
These improvements support a number of SEMCOG’s regional plans and policies, as the finished project incorporates conservation, inclusive outdoor recreation opportunities, and enhanced access to water resources.
