What does it take to be prepared for the changing world of work? Take this short survey and tell us what you think.

Why this survey? What challenges do we face?

Technology is transforming the economy and just about every aspect of our lives, including communication, transportation, and employment. With increased technology in the workplace, 47 percent of American jobs could be obsolete in the next 20 years. This will lead to changing demands for skills across industries and occupations at every level – not just Information Technology.

To address this challenge, we need to develop and promote strong systems of lifelong learning and career pathways. This will help ensure that our workforce can access education and training throughout their careers to remain employable and support business growth. Identifying and effectively addressing changing workplace needs and equipping our workforce with the required skills will give Southeast Michigan a competitive advantage, especially as the region faces a declining working-age population.

Southeast Michigan has the opportunity to build on quality schools, nimble community colleges, world-class universities, labor- and industry-led apprenticeship programs, responsive workforce development systems, and new business education partnerships. How we leverage these assets to develop a workforce with the skills needed for future growth is the objective of a new SEMCOG/Metropolitan Affairs Coalition (MAC) Task Force on Future Skills starting up this Spring.

To prepare for this, we have developed a new SEMCOG/MAC Pulse of the Region survey asking for public input on the impact of our education system on their careers and what skills people feel are most important for success in the workplace. We are interested in opinions about lifelong learning and the notion that people will have to update their skills over the length of their careers. We will use the results to inform the Future Skills Task Force. Feel free to share it with your networks.

So do you think you are prepared for the changing world of work? Take the survey and let us know your thoughts.
